Switzerland: Activists demonstrating at Paradeplatz in Zurich March 20
Activists demonstrating at Paradeplatz in Zurich March 20. Increased security, localized disruptions likely; isolated clashes possible.
Event
Multiple activist groups are currently demonstrating at Paradeplatz in central Zurich March 20 to denounce government intervention and the potential use of public funds in the rescue of Credit Suisse bank. The main demonstrations have been organized by left-wing groups such as the Young Socialists of Switzerland (JUSO). Activists from Mass-Voll, a right-wing group, also plan to demonstrate in the same location; JUSO denounces their participation.
Additional police are deployed to monitor and facilitate the gatherings. Large crowds and associated security measures, including possible road closures and movement restrictions, will likely prompt localized disruptions in the surrounding area. Public transport services normally operating in the area may be canceled or diverted. Isolated clashes between activists and police, or between rival groups of activists, cannot be ruled out.
Advice
Avoid the demonstration as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Check for disruptions and allow extra time for travel in the affected area the evening of March 20.
