Palau Country Report
Located in the Western Pacific Ocean, Palau is an archipelago nation comprised of more than 340 islands. Economic activity in Palau is primarily linked to tourism, subsistence agriculture and fishing, although a significant portion of the country’s gross national product comes from foreign aid. Much of the country’s economic activity is concentrated in the commercial center Koror. The archipelago has a generally benign security threat environment, with most risks for foreigners stemming from natural hazards and overland travel.
Security
There are no major conflict or terrorism risks in Palau. Levels of criminal activity in the territory are relatively low but petty theft such as pick-pocketing and bag-snatching does occur. Unrest is rare in Palau, with only a handful of isolated protests being staged in recent years. Demonstrations that do occur generally remain peaceful.
Infrastructure
There are no major safety concerns with regard to Palau’s aviation sector.
The country’s road network is generally adequate in Koror but is considerably less developed on other islands.
The ports are considered efficient.
Electricity and communications infrastructure is generally good with the vast majority of the population being connected to the national grid.
Palau is vulnerable to cyber attacks which can result in significant disruptions to maritime security operations and financial operations.
Environment
Palau has a warm, tropical climate with two different seasons, the dry season between December and April and the rainy season from April to December. Temperatures range between 26°C (78°F) and 32°C (90°F).
Palau is affected by seasonal tropical storms and occasional cyclones, with most severe weather occurring from June to November. These storm systems can cause significant damage and disruption to service provision. The islands are also located in a seismically active region and experience occasional moderate to high-intensity earthquakes. There is also a risk of tsunamis from major offshore earthquakes in the Pacific region. World War II-era unexploded ordnance is present both onshore and offshore, particularly in Peleliu and Angaur.
Health and Medical
Mosquito-borne diseases, including dengue and Zika, are present in Palau and outbreaks are occasionally reported. Medical facilities are limited but generally adequate for basic and routine medical procedures. However, medical evacuation may be required for more serious injuries or conditions. Common over-the-counter and prescription pharmaceuticals are readily available, although some may be harder to acquire in some remote areas.
Political
Palau is a generally stable democracy that has experienced frequent and peaceful transfers of power since the 1990s. However, corruption remains an issue in the country, particularly in the public sector. Rule of law is generally perceived as adequate in Palau.
