Ukraine: Protests block Slovak border crossings Nov. 28

Ukrainian motorists continue to protest at the border with Slovakia on November 28; associated disruptions

Warning

Event

Motorists continue to stage protests throughout Ukraine as of Wednesday, November 28. Although the situation has normalized in various parts of the country, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine (BPSU) has reported that border crossings into Slovakia - through the Mali Berezniy and Uzhgorod checkpoints - have been blocked due to ongoing demonstrations.

Context

The AvtoEvroSila organization launched nationwide protests on November 20 as part of a sustained effort to protest a law, passed in early November, that will increase taxes on foreign-registered vehicles. The law structures taxes based, among others, on the age of the automobile, with older vehicles taxed at a higher rate than newer ones.

Advice

Individuals in Ukraine are advised to monitor developments to the situation, allow for extra time to reach their destinations, and avoid all protests as a precaution.
