Greece: Former prime minister wounded in bombing in Athens May 25

Police officials reported that Former Prime Minister Lucas Papademos was wounded after an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded in his car in Athens on Thursday, May 25. The attack took place at approximately 18:30 (local time) at the intersection of Patission and Marnis Street. According to officials, the IED was hidden inside a letter. Papademos, his driver, and a body guard all received wounds from the blast that are not life threatening. Police are investigating the incident.

Context

The motivation for the attack remains unclear and no group has claimed responsibility for the bombing. Papademos was appointed as prime minster in November 2011 and served until May 2012. He is also the former vice president of the European Central Bank.
