Clashes occurred on the streets of Kolkata for the second time in the space of a week on Thursday, May 25, as protesting Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers fought with police forces during the party's "Lalbazar Abhijan" march towards the Kolkata Police headquarters. The protesters left from from Esplanade, Howrah station, and College Square. Local reports indicate that the protesters threw stones and a petrol bomb at police and set a police vehicle ablaze. Police reportedly retaliated using tear gas, water cannons, and baton charges. Reports indicate that 141 protesters were arrested and 200 were injured. To condemn the violence, the BJP will organize protest rallies and meetings across the state of West Bengal on Friday, May 26. Additional violence cannot be ruled out.

BJP supporters are protesting against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her government over a deteriorating law and order situation in the state.
