Myanmar: Three people killed by strong winds on May 5-7

Gale-force winds kill three people, injure three others, and destroy 3000 homes in various regions on May 5-7

Between May 5 and May 7, three people were killed and nearly 3000 houses were destroyed by gale-force winds that swept through the regions of Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay, Bago, Sagaing, Magwe, and Ayeyarwady, as well as in Kachin, Kayah, and Shan states. All three deaths occurred in Nay Pyi Taw and Sagaing regions, while three injuries were reported in Depeyin and Kani. Most of the material damage was reported in the Magwe and Sagaing regions and in Kachin state.

Weather conditions have now stabilized and are back to normal. Seasonal rains are forecast to be widespread in Taninthayi Region, Kachin, and Shan states through at least Friday, May 12.

Gales are rare in these areas, which are normally at risk of devastating fires and floods.
