France: Meningitis cases in Paris

Event

Two cases of bacterial meningitis have been reported at the American University in Paris within the past few months. The Regional Health Agency of Île-de-France reports that the first case was confirmed in February, while the second was confirmed in May. One of the two cases resulted in the death of a 19-year-old-student. Due to the high contamination risk, some 200 students (out of approximately 1000) have been vaccinated.

Context

Symptoms of meningococcal meningitis, a contagious bacterial disease, include fever, headache, stiff neck, nausea, vomiting, and increased sensitivity to light. If left untreated, it is fatal in approximately 50 percent of cases. A vaccine is available.
