Laos: Tropical storm Sonca to impact most of country July 26

The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment warned on Tuesday, July 25, that tropical storm Sonca would hit Laos on Wednesday, July 26. Borikhamxay, Khammouane, and Savannakhet provinces will be impacted first, and scattered thunderstorms are forecast in the northern provinces of Luang Prabang, Xayaboury, Xiengkhuang, and Xaysomboun. The southern provinces of Saravane, Champassak, Sekong, and Attapeu will also be impacted by thunderstorms, as will the capital Vientiane and its surrounding area.

Flash floods are possible in low-lying areas.

Context

The rainy season lasts from May to November and particularly affects the southern part of the country and the areas along the Mekong River.

Advice

Individuals in Laos are advised to monitor weather forecasts and to adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g., potential evacuation orders). Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
