Spain: Red alert due to fierce heatwave July 13-14

Local authorities issued red alerts for six provinces in Spain on Thursday, July 13, amid a fierce heatwave expected to continue until Friday, July 14.  Extreme temperatures - soaring to an unprecedented 46.9°C (116.4°F) in Jaen - are forecasted in Jaén, Córdoba, Granada, Seville, Cáceres, and Badajoz. Twelve other provinces (Cádiz, Huelva, Málaga, Teruel, Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Guadalajara, Toledo, Ávila, Salamanca, and Madrid) have been placed under lesser orange alerts.

Advice

Individuals in areas affected by extreme temperatures are advised to avoid strenuous outdoor activity, to remain well-hydrated (with sugar-free, non-alcoholic beverages), to wear loose, light-colored clothing, and to remain indoors during the hottest part of the day (generally between 10:00 and 15:00). Do not hesitate to seek medical attention if displaying symptoms of heatstroke (headache, dizziness, muscle weakness, lack of sweating despite high heat, rapid heartbeat, etc.).
