Turkey: Around 350 people injured by earthquake near Bodrum July 21 /update 1

Event

Turkish officials announced that around 350 people suffered injuries in Bodrum resulting from the 6.7-magnitude earthquake that struck around 01:30 (local time) on Friday, July 21. According to authorities, most people only suffered light injuries, many as they were attempting to leave buildings. The quake caused limited damage to buildings in the city and reportedly caused some flooding in the lower floors of hotels and restaurants located on the seafront. Media sources said that a number of tourists have decided to leave Bodrum. Further aftershocks remain possible.

Context

According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake’s epicenter was 10 km (6 mi) off the coast of Bodrum at a depth of about 10 km (6 mi). The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a small tsunami, advising people in affected areas to avoid beaches and seek high ground. Multiple aftershocks were also reported.

The quake also impacted the resort city of Kos in Greece. More than 100 people were injured and two killed in the city. A number of older buildings were damaged and thousands of guests were forced to evacuate their hotels.

Individuals present in areas affected by the earthquake are advised to follow any instructions issued by local authorities and be prepared for potential aftershocks. Only use your telephone in case of urgency to leave communication lines open for emergency services.
