Turkey: Flooding in Istanbul due to heavy rain July 27

Istanbul experiences flooding due to heavy rains July 27; widespread transportation disruptions reported

Warning

Event

A storm brought heavy rain to Istanbul on Thursday evening (local time), July 27, flooding streets and disrupting the evening rush hour.  Flooding closed off access to roads and underpasses, causing widespread transportation blockages and hazardous conditions. The authorities suspended metro services and tram service from the Bağcılar suburb to Kabataş. As a precautionary measure, authorities also closed the Eurasian Tunnel. Flights at Istanbul Atatürk International Airport were also canceled or diverted to other airports.  At least two people were reportedly injured as a result of these conditions.

Current forecasts indicate that conditions will improve on Friday, July 28.

Advice

Individuals in Istanbul are advised to confirm flight reservations, follow all instructions as issued by local authorities (e.g. possible evacuation orders), and follow local weather forecasts. In the event of further flooding, remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
