Brazil: Arson attacks on federal buildings in Humaitá Oct. 27
Additional security forces deployed to Humaitá (Amazon region) following arson attacks on federal buildings October 27
Event
Additional security forces were deployed to the northern town of Humaitá on Saturday, October 28, following attacks on federal buildings the day prior. The attacks were reportedly carried out by a group of at least 100 men, who set fire to buildings belonging to Brazil's environmental protection agency (IBAMA) as well as several vehicles. No injuries were reported.
The attacks are believed to have been carried out by gold miners in retaliation to an ongoing government crackdown on illegal mining operations in the Amazon region.
Context
Illegal miners often look for gold in protected areas or indigenous lands in the Amazon region. During the gold mining process, miners dump mercury and other toxic chemicals into rivers. IBAMA, which is tasked with safeguarding the country's natural resources, regularly operates with security forces to shut down illicit mining operations. On Friday, federal agents reportedly burned several barges being used in gold mining operations, triggering the retaliatory attacks.
Advice
Individuals in the Amazon region should follow any instructions issued by the local authorities.
