Ireland: Remnants of Hurricane Ophelia to hit October 16 /update 1
Severe weather warning issued as remnants of Hurricane Ophelia hit on October 16; localized flooding, transportation disruptions possible
Event
Heavy rainfall and fierce winds with gusts between 110 - 130 km/h (70 - 80 mph), and high seas are forecast in Ireland beginning on Monday, October 16, due to the remnants of Ex-Hurricane Ophelia, currently heading towards the island. The post-tropical storm cyclone is expected to track close to and potentially over some parts of the western coast of the country from Monday morning. On October 14, the Irish Meteorological Service (Met Eireann) issued a nationwide Status Red (the most serious on a three point scale) wind warning for Galway, Mayo, Clare, Cork and Kerry and a Status Orange wind warning for the rest of the country for October 15 - 16.
Localized flooding, structural damage and transportation disruptions may occur, especially in coastal areas.
Advice
Individuals in Ireland are advised to follow local weather forecasts and confirm travel reservations. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
