Brazil: US Embassy warns against using public transportation in Recife Nov. 3

The US Embassy issued a warning on November 3, advising against using public transportation in Recife due to increased crime

Warning

Event

On Friday, November 3, the US Embassy issued a warning advising all employees and their families against using public transportation in the city of Recife due to a recent wave of crime targeting public buses in the city. Also in light this recent surge in crime, the embassy warned against walking along Pina Beach (located in the Boa Viagem neighborhood of Recife) after dark.

Context

Brazil's criminal landscape has witnessed changes in the past few months as turf wars between major criminal gangs and the subsequent emergence of splinter groups has further undermined security across the country, including in Recife.

Social tensions are also on the rise across the country due to the poor economic situation following the decline in commodity prices, a mounting political crisis since the impeachment of Dilma Roussef, state and business corruption scandals, and the implementation of austerity measures (impacting the police and other state bureaucracies).

Advice

Generally speaking, individuals present in Brazil are advised to conceal signs of wealth to avoid attracting the attention of would-be thieves and avoid entering favelas (slums; often located in very close proximity to more affluent neighborhoods). Keep in mind that criminals are often armed; never offer resistance if assaulted.
