Argentina: Protests, possible strike in Buenos Aires December 18 /update 1

Event

Anti-government protests are scheduled in central Buenos Aires on Monday, December 18, denouncing planned pension reforms as well as condemning the heavy-handed government response to related protests that occurred on December 14. Some protests will begin at 08:00 (local time), including at the Obelisco and Puente Pueyrredón; however, the largest demonstrations are expected around the National Congress building  and on Mayo and Rivadavia avenues beginning at 12:00. An increased security presence is anticipated surrounding all demonstrations and associated transportation disruptions are likely. Violence cannot be ruled out. 

In addition, la Confederación General del Trabajo de la República Argentina (CGT) reportedly plans to launch a 24-hour general strike beginning at 12:00, although the union has not officially announced its intention to strike. CGT leadership is expected to make an announcement at 09:00 on Monday morning confirming details of the potential work stoppage. It is currently unclear which sectors may be affected by the strike.

Context

Violence broke out in Buenos Aires on Thursday, December 14, during a protest organized to denounce pension reforms being debated by congress. Thousands of demonstrators reportedly clashed with police, who used water cannons, tear gas, and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd that had gathered outside the congress building. Following the incident, congress temporarily suspended debate on the reforms.
