Iran: Major air pollution in Tehran December 18

Event

Air pollution in Tehran has reached alarming levels these past few days, pushing the authorities to close primary schools on Sunday, December 17, and Monday, December 18, and to cancel all sporting events. The authorities have also implemented driving restrictions, including a blanket ban on trucks.

Context

Airborne concentration of fine particles hit 185 micrograms per cubic meter in the south of Tehran December 16-17; according to the World Health Organization, levels above 25 are unhealthy. This pollution is reportedly mainly caused by the 8 million vehicles on the roads in the capital and the particular weather conditions currently preventing polluted air from escaping the city.

This pollution could cause eye, nose, and throat irritation and aggravate cardiovascular and respiratory conditions (such as asthma).

Individuals present in the Tehran region are advised to limit outdoor activities until the situation normalizes.

Vulnerable individuals - such as children, pregnant women, and people with chronic illnesses - should be particularly vigilant.
