Protest march to be held at 17:00 (local time) in Buenos Aires January 11; expect localized traffic disruptions and increased security measures

Warning

Event

A protest march organized by civil society groups, trade unions, and human rights organizations is scheduled to take place in Buenos Aires on Thursday, September 11. The march is set to begin at 17:00 (local time) at the National Congress and will end at the Plaza de Mayo. Localized traffic disruptions and an increased security presence is anticipated. Associated violence cannot be ruled out.

Context

The demonstration is being held to demand greater accountability from the government for violence that broke out during protests on December 14 and 18, 2017, allegedly due to the government's heavy-handed response. The march organizers believe that members of security forces allegedly involved in the violence are being treated with impunity. The violence broke out during protests organized to denounce pension reforms then being debated by congress. Thousands of demonstrators reportedly clashed with police, who used water cannons, tear gas, and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd that had gathered outside the congress building. The congress passed the controversial pension reform bill amid further protests on December 19.

Advice

Individuals in Buenos Aires are advised to avoid all protests as a precaution and allow additional time to travel.
