Ireland: Blizzard conditions, major disruptions March 1 /update 1

Winter Storm Emma has brought strong winds and significant snowfall to various parts of Ireland as of Thursday, March 1, and similar conditions are forecast for Friday, March 2. The Met Éireann (Irish Meterological Service) has issued a red warning (the highest level) for the whole country through 15:00 (local time) on Friday. Blizzard-like conditions are forecast for Munster and Leinster counties, particularly in southern and eastern coastal areas. Snow-ice warnings have also been issued for Connacht, Cavan, Monaghan, and Donegal counties.

Significant air, rail, and road transportation disruptions due to the snowstorm and freezing temperatures have been reported and are expected to continue. Officials suspended all Bus Éireann services in Leinster and Munster counties along with Dublin Bus services on March 1. Aer Lingus (Ireland's national airline) has suspended operations at Dublin, Shannon, Cork, and Belfast (UK) airports as of 15:00 on Thursday. The airline has also canceled all arriving and departing flights scheduled for Friday at the same airports; however eastbound Transatlantic operations are still expected to continue.
