Germany: Neo-Nazi rally in Ostritz April 20-21

The National Democratic Party (NPD) is planning a two-day event in Ostritz on Friday, April 20, and Saturday, April 21, in commemoration of Adolf Hitler’s birthday. The event, which has been registered with the regional council, will be held on the grounds of Hotel Neisseblick and feature live music as well as speeches by NPD members. Organizers reportedly expect up to 750 people to be in attendance. Dozens of German mayors signed a joint declaration on Friday, April 13, denouncing the event. Expect increased security measures and potential traffic disruptions in the area. Clashes between neo-Nazi attendees and left-wing groups - who may stage protests - cannot be ruled out.

Context

German law allows the authorities to place strict stipulations on national socialist events that aim to incite hatred. It is illegal to use Nazi symbols and language, such as the swastika and SS insignia, at far-right rallies.

Celebrations marking Hitler's birthday are common within neo-Nazi subcultures around the world. Similar events frequently draw protesters and sometimes result in clashes.
