French Embassy vandalized by anarchistic Rouvikonas group April 22 in response to intervention in Syria; no injuries

Informational

Event

On the afternoon of Sunday, April 22, members of the Rouvikonas anarchist group vandalized the French Embassy in Athens. Red paint was thrown on the embassy building. No one was injured.

A statement issued by the group declared that the act was in protest of French military intervention in Syria, and in solidarity with ongoing social protests in France.

Context

Rouvikonas has claimed responsibility for dozens of acts of vandalism and assaults in the past against various targets, including state offices, financial agencies, media organizations, and politicians. The group has scaled up its activities in recent months. Government critics suggest authorities have been turning a blind eye to the group as arrests are rare.
