Greece: National ferry strike extended April 18-20 /update 1

Nationwide ferry strike extended until April 20

Warning

Event

A nationwide strike by ferry workers, originally slated to last for 24 hours from 06:00 (local time) on April 18 to 06:00 on April 19, has been extended an additional day. Ferry services are therefore expected to remain suspended through the morning (local time) of Friday, April 20. Severe disruptions to ferry services are to be anticipated in the coming days, as well as increased demand for ferry tickets once the strike concludes.

Context

The strike was initiated by the Panhellenic Seamen's Federation labor union following a government decision to permit cargo ships to sail with minimal crew - a move which critics say threatens jobs. The strike coincides with the start of the spring tourism season in Greece.

Advice

Travelers in Greece are advised to prepare for limited ferry services and to make other travel arrangements if necessary.
