Somalia: Gunfire in Mogadishu April 23

Reports of gunfire in the Hodon district of Mogadishu April 23

Warning

Event

According to local reports, armed clashes broke out between two government military groups in the Hodon district of the capital Mogadishu, near the former United Arab Emirates (UAE) military training camp, on Monday, April 23. Clashes erupted between UAE-trained troops and Somali National Army (SNA) forces, reportedly over access to an armory base. Reports suggest the exchange is now over and that the UAE-trained troops have surrendered. Casualties have been reported but the exact number remains unknown; details are still emerging.

Context

Clashes between the different security forces are not uncommon in Somalia, due to misunderstandings and Al-Shabaab militants often operating in stolen uniforms.

Advice

Individuals in Mogadishu are advised to avoid the above area, remain vigilant, monitor the situation, and adhere to instructions issued by the local authorities.

Due to the high threat of terrorism, individuals present throughout Somalia are advised to avoid government and institutional buildings as well as political events due to Al-Shabaab's tendency to target political figures and security forces. Because of extremely poor security conditions, travel should only be considered with appropriate security precautions in place.
