Warning

Event

Two suicide vehicle-born improvised explosive device (SVBIED) attacks were carried out in the capital Mogadishu on Friday, April 6. The first incident occurred at approximately 12:40 (local time) near the KM4 junction. According to initial reports, only the driver was killed in the blast. The second attack took place about two hours later at the Sei Piano security checkpoint near Banadir Hospital. Security forces reportedly shot and killed three militants in a vehicle before the VBIED exploded; at least two soldiers were also killed. Official casualty figures are expected to be released in the coming hours as details are still emerging.

Context

Al-Shabaab is suspected of being responsible for the attacks. The group continues to control large zones in the south and center of Somalia and attacks from the group are frequent across the country, including in Mogadishu. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the Western- and UN-backed government and impose its own strict interpretation of Islam in Somalia.

Advice

Individuals in Mogadishu are advised to avoid the area of the blast, remain vigilant for potential militant activity, and adhere to instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

Due to the high threat of terrorism, individuals present throughout Somalia are advised to avoid government and institutional buildings as well as political events due to Al-Shabaab's tendency to target political figures and security forces. Travel to the country should only be considered with appropriate security precautions in place.
