Benin: Judges, teachers, and health workers end strike May 7

The National Union of Benin Magistrates (UNAMAB) decided to end the strike begun on February 26 in order to allow for negotiations with the government. Courts reopened on Monday, May 7.

Furthermore, unions from the education and health sectors also decided to end their separate, four-months strikes on Monday, May 7. Teachers and health workers are expected to resume work on Tuesday but warned that further strikes are possible in the coming months if their demands remain unmet.

Context

Mounting discontent among the Beninese population has been observed in recent months over the perceived poor management of the country by President Patrice Talon. Benin is currently facing a severe economic crisis, with unemployment at its highest point and purchasing power at its lowest in recent memory. Civil servant strikes and protests have become common in recent months.
