China: Heavy rain forecast in Sichuan province May 24

Heavy rain forecast in Sichuan province on May 24; thousands evacuated

Warning

Event

Heavy rain is forecast across Sichuan province on Thursday, May 24, leading to evacuations. In Emeishan, up to 33.2 cm (13 in) of precipitation has already been recorded. Localized flooding and landslides are possible in affected areas. Consequent road and air transportation disruptions (including hazardous driving conditions, road closures, and flight delays and cancelations) cannot be ruled out.

Context

Authorities reported that around 4000 individuals have been evacuated since the beginning of the current rain spell, which started on May 20. On May 22, a landslide triggered by heavy rain significantly disrupted the rail network in Sichuan and Yunnan provinces.

Advice

Individuals present in Sichuan province are advised to keep abreast of the situation, avoid areas directly hit by flooding, anticipate transportation disruptions, and adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities or their home governments. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
