Argentina: National general strike June 25 /update 1

Event

Labor unions have called for a nationwide general strike to take place on Monday, June 25. Significant transportation and commercial disruptions are to be expected throughout the day, along with large-scale protests (and consequent traffic disruptions), notably in the capital Buenos Aires. As many as 18,000 aviation-sector workers (pilots, cabin crew staff, mechanics, etc.) could take part and as such major flight disruptions are possible at airports across the country; residual disruptions are possible June 26. Public transit workers will also be on strike, which could lead to the suspension of services on the Buenos Aires metro (subte), commuter rail network, and bus (colectivo) network. Striking truck drivers, and other protesters, could potentially erect roadblocks on streets and highways. Bank workers will also be on strike, which could result in the closure of bank branches nationwide and cash shortages at ATMs.

Context

The strike is being held to denounce the economic policies of President Mauricio Macri’s conservative government, notably a recent agreement made with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Larger demonstrations in Argentina can result in major traffic chaos that can significantly disrupt daily life. Clashes with security forces and other low-intensity violence occasionally occurs.
