Greece: Flooding causes disruptions near Athens June 27 /update 1

Thunderstorms and heavy rain caused flooding and traffic disruptions around Athens on Wednesday, June 27. Traffic along the Athens-Corinth highway was blocked for approximately two hours on the afternoon (local time) of June 27 near Elefsina due to an abandoned vehicle. The exit off of the highway towards Mandra was also closed due to the weather. Significant flooding was reported in Mandra, rendering some streets impassable. Serious flooding was also reported in other parts of central Greece, including surrounding Kanalia, where approximately 30 homes were flooded and many roads blocked by water. Widespread flooding and severe traffic disruptions was also reported in the Halkidiki area as well as in Larissa. Thunderstorm warnings remain in effect for most of Greece through Thursday, June 28, with conditions expected to improve by Friday; the Greek National Meteorological Service (EMY) has issued a red alert warning (the highest on a three-tier scale) for extreme weather in central Greece through Wednesday. Additional transportation disruptions and flash flooding is possible.
