Laos: Flood warnings in the south through August 4 /update 2

Event

The Mekong River Commission has issued flood alerts for areas along the Mekong River from Nakhon Phanom (Thailand) to Pakse until Saturday, August 4, due to high water levels caused by heavy rains and the recent collapse of a dam in Attapeu province. Heavy rains forecasted for the region may also bring flooding and landslides to the north of the country over the coming days, affecting areas between Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang. Consequent power outages and transportation disruptions are possible in affected areas.

Context

The collapse of a hydropower dam in southern Attapeu province on July 23 killed at least 13 people with 113 others still missing and has brought flooding to the much of the central and northern regions. Laos has experienced heavy rains and flooding since the start of monsoon season, which typically begins in May and lasts through November.

Advice

Individuals in Laos, especially in the abovementioned areas, are advised to follow all instructions as issued by local authorities (e.g. possible evacuation orders), follow local weather forecasts, and verify travel plans prior to setting out. In the event of further flooding, remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
