A large cyclonic storm is moving northeast through the Mediterranean and will bring heavy rain and strong winds to Greece and Turkey from Friday, September 28, through Monday, October 1. The storm, dubbed a "Medicane," is predicted to bring wind gusts of 95 km/h (60 mph) and rainfall of 5-7 cm (2-3 in) to areas of southern Greece and western Turkey, including the cities of Kalamata (Greece) and Izmir (Turkey). Crete may may receive up to 10-15 cm (4-6 in) of rain. High surf and coastal flooding are also likely. Greece issued a severe weather warning and suspended some ferry services. Further transportation disruptions, along with power outages, are likely.
