A shallow 5.6-magnitude earthquake shakes western Assam in northeastern India on September 12; no initial reports of damage
Event
The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported a 5.6-magnitude earthquake in western Assam at 10:20 (local time) on Wednesday, September 12, at a depth of 10 km (6.2 mi). Tremors were rated as "Very Strong" (seven out of ten categories), with reports of shaking in neighboring states of West Bengal and Bihar as well as in Bangladesh. No damage was reported as of 10:50 on Wednesday. Possible aftershocks are likely in the coming hours and days.
Context
Assam is located near the edge of the Indian tectonic plate, where it meets with the Eurasian plate to form the Himalaya Mountains. Earthquakes in Assam and the northeastern states are common.
