Sudan: Opposition leader to return December 19
Prominent opposition leader returns to Sudan on December 19; except disruptions in Khartoum
Event
Opposition leader of the National Umma Party, Imam El Sadig El Mahdi, is set to return to Sudan on Wednesday, December 19, following over 10 months of self-imposed exile. As such, large gatherings and significant transportation disruptions are to be expected around Khartoum International Airport (KRT), as well as around Africa street, the Embassies area, Nile street, and the nearby city of Omdurman, all located near the airport. A heightened security presence is also to be anticipated in the capital.
Context
El Mahdi was on self-imposed exile between August 2014 and early 2017 after being accused by the National Intelligence and Security Service of undermining the constitution. He left again in February 2018 after being accused by the State Security Prosecution service in Sudan of dealing with rebel movements to overthrow the regime.
Advice
Individuals present in Sudan are advised to keep abreast of the situation, remain vigilant, and avoid all demonstrations as violence may flare up without warning.
