Sudan: Increased fighting between rival factions reported in Khartoum, Sept. 26

Military offensive prompts increased fighting between rival factions in Khartoum, Sudan, Sept. 26.

Warning

Increased fighting between the warring Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) is occurring in parts of Khartoum on Sept. 26. The SAF launched an offensive around 02:00 Sept. 26, with reports of aerial shelling. The military targets were located in the RSF-controlled areas in Khartoum and Khartoum North (Bahri). Fighting is especially intense near bridges between Khartoum and Omdurman. No reports are suggesting Khartoum International Airport (KRT) is impacted.

Further heavy fighting is likely in the coming hours and days. Most of the violence will likely be concentrated around key military positions and chokepoints such as bridges, avenues, government, telecommunications, and transport buildings. Disruptions to road travel, airports, internet and mobile phone services, and access to essential goods are probable. Local authorities may also impose curfews. Authorities could impose enhanced security measures on foreign nationals abroad.

Shelter in place until the situation stabilizes. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation. Avoid concentrations of security personnel. Liaise with trusted contacts for further information. Reconfirm road status if ground travel is unavoidable. Carry personal identification documents at all times. Conserve battery power on essential equipment, such as mobile phones. Conserve basic supplies, including food and water.

The fighting is a continuation of the years-long power struggle between Sudan's de facto ruler, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and RSF leader General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti.
