Ireland: Nurses to hold 24-hour strikes nationwide throughout February

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organization (Inmo) held its second of a series of 24-hour nationwide strikes on Tuesday, February 5. According to Ireland’s Health Service Executive (HSE), around 37,000 people participated in the strike at 240 locations. Significant disruptions to health services were reported across the country, with an estimated 27,000 patients being affected. All outpatient, inpatient, and day surgery appointments were also canceled on Tuesday, due to the lack of nurses. Further 24-hour strikes are planned on Thursday, February 7, and February 12-14. Significant disruptions to health services, as well as associated protests, are expected on the abovementioned dates.

Context

The unions are calling for an across the board pay raise to help recruit and retain staff. However, the government has argued that the increased cost would be unaffordable. The first 24-hour strike was held on January 30, with 25,000 nurses participating in the work stoppage.
