Protesters are blocking entrances to courthouses across the city to denounce a release order for Kocharyan issued on May 18 by the Court of First Instance of General Jurisdiction.

A heightened security presence and associated transportation disruptions are anticipated near the demonstration sites. Further demonstrations by supporters of Kocharyan are possible in the near term.

Context

Former President Robert Kocharyan, who was arrested in December 2018, is facing charges of "overthrowing the constitutional order of Armenia" and bribery during his term as president. Kocharyan is accused of being complicit in the deaths of 10 people during post-election demonstrations in 2008.
