EU member states to hold European Parliament elections May 23-26; election-related gatherings likely over coming days

EU member states are set to hold elections for the European Parliament from Thursday, May 23, through Sunday, May 26. Polling will be held across all 28 EU member states on the following dates: 

  • May 23: UK and Netherlands
  • May 24: Ireland and Czech Republic
  • May 25: Czech Republic, Slovakia, Latvia, France, and Malta
  • May 26: France, Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Luxembourg, Italy, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Austria, Hungary, Slovenia, Greece, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria, and Cyprus

A heightened security presence is to be expected near polling stations. Further protests and election-related rallies are likely over the coming days, particularly in the wake of the election.

Context

The EU is holding its ninth parliamentary election since the first vote was held in 1979. A total of 751 Members of European Parliament (MEP) represent roughly 512 million people across 28 member states.
