Somalia: Unconfirmed reports of eight killed in Mogadishu blasts June 15 /update 1

Event

Unconfirmed reports claim at least eight people were killed and 16 others wounded in twin blasts in Mogadishu on Saturday, June 15. The explosions were reportedly from the detonation of vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs). The first VBIED detonated near the Ministry of Internal Security at approximately 13:12 (local time), reportedly leaving eight dead and 16 others wounded. National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) soldiers fired upon a second vehicle, wounding and capturing the driver, after the vehicle failed to slow on approach to a NISA checkpoint near the KM4 junction; the second VBIED detonated around 13:19 after security forces cleared the area around the vehicle, resulting in no casualties. Though no claim of responsibility was immediately reported, Al-Shabaab militants frequently carry out similar attacks in the capital.

Additional attacks are possible in Mogadishu over the near term.

Context

Al-Shabaab continues to exercise effective control over large zones in the south and center of Somalia and attacks from the group are frequent across the country, including in Mogadishu. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the West- and UN-backed government and impose its own strict interpretation of Islam in Somalia.
