Colombia: UN Security Council to visit July 11-14

Event

A UN Security Council mission will visit Colombia from Thursday, July 11, to Sunday, July 14, to verify and report on the implementation of the 2016 Colombian peace agreement. The delegation will travel to Bogotá to meet with President Iván Duque and other government officials and will also travel to one of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) reintegration sites.

Protests are possible throughout the country during the US Security Council mission and travelers should expect heightened security measures, especially in the capital city of Bogota.

Context

Local and international human rights groups have been critical of President Iván Duque and his party, the Democratic Center, for their public opposition to the peace agreement and the violence that has taken place since its ratification. Since the beginning of the peace process in 2016, 134 demobilized members of the FARC and more than 700 community leaders and human rights activists have been assassinated.

Strikes and protests denouncing the Colombian government and its policies are frequent and have occasionally become violent.
