A nationwide teachers’ strike is scheduled for August 28-29; heightened security presences and transportation disruptions expected

Warning

Event

Teachers nationwide are scheduled to participate in a 48-hour strike from Wednesday, August 28, to Thursday, August 29, to draw attention to poor health coverage and the targeted murders of teachers and other human rights activists in Colombia. Demonstrations are expected to take place nationwide; a caravan of demonstrators will reportedly travel from Bogota on Tuesday, August 27, to Popayan, where it is expected to arrive on August 29.

A heightened security presence and transportation disruptions should be expected surrounding all protests. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Individuals in Colombia are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests as a precaution, and obey all instructions issued by the local authorities.
