Warning

Event

The Hurricane Warning for the British Virgin Islands has been discontinued by the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) as of 23:00 (local time) on Wednesday, August 28. Minor damages were reported on Wednesday after Hurricane Dorian moved through the area. According to media reports, roofs were ripped off of buildings and roads were flooded on the island of Tortola. However, Governor Augustus Jaspert announced that crews were already clearing roads and inspecting infrastructure by Wednesday afternoon. Power outages had been reported but service is expected to be restored in the coming hours. Lingering transportation and business disruptions are anticipated into Thursday, August 29.

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate consequent power outages and transportation and business disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
