Tropical Storm Karen to pass near or over British Virgin Islands September 24; rain, wind, and associated disruptions to transportation and business expected

Tropical Storm Karen is forecast to move near or over the British Virgin Islands on the evening (local time) of Tuesday, September 24, according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC). A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for the islands. As of 14:00 on Tuesday, Karen is located at approximately 17.5°N, 66.0°W (map here). The storm is tracking northward at 13 kph (8 mph) with maximum sustained winds of 70 kph (45 mph). Karen is forecast to produce rainfall totals of 5-10 cm (2-4 in) in the British Virgin Islands through Wednesday, September 25, with localized totals of up to 20 cm (8 in) of rainfall.
Life-threatening flash flooding, damaging winds, and high storm surge are likely in affected areas. Associated power outages and disruptions to transportation and business services are to be expected in areas forecast to be affected by the storm over the coming hours and days.
