Colombia: Nationwide protests scheduled for October 17

Several groups call for nationwide protests on October 17; avoid all protests

Warning

Event

Several unions and student groups have called for nationwide protests on Thursday, October 17. Groups seek to denounce several issues, including labor and pension reforms brought by President Ivan Duque's administration. Although times and locations were not immediately announced, protests should be expected primarily in Bogota. Other urban centers such as Medellin and Cali are likely to hold related demonstrations.

A heightened security presence is to be expected, as well as associated transportation disruptions at and near all demonstration sites. Clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Individuals in Colombia, and particularly in Bogota, are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all public demonstrations as a precaution, anticipate localized disruption and a heightened security presence in the event of any demonstrations, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
