Netherlands: Hospital workers to strike nationwide November 20

Major unions representing hospital workers plan nationwide strike on November 20; disruptions to health care services expected

Warning

Event

Around 100,000 hospital workers are expected to strike on Wednesday, November 20. The industrial action is being organized by four of the major labor unions in an effort to receive pay increases and reduced hours. During the strike, workers will refuse to perform any non-emergency duties. Academic hospitals will not be affected by the work stoppage. Disruptions to health care services are expected during the strike and associated rallies may also take place.

As of Saturday, October 26, negotiations are ongoing between the unions and the Dutch Association of Hospitals (NVZ). The strike may be called off if an agreement is reached in the coming weeks.

Advice

Individuals in the Netherlands are advised to monitor developments to the situation, confirm doctor's appointments, to anticipate longer waiting times in medical facilities for the duration of the strike, and to avoid any potential protests.
