Spain: Protesters occupy Barcelona Airport October 14 /update 1

Protesters are reportedly occupying Barcelona El-Prat Airport (BCN) as of early afternoon (local time) on Monday, October 14, amid ongoing protests across the city after the Supreme Court sentenced nine Catalonian pro-independence activists to between nine and 13 years in prison over their role in the region's bid for independence in 2017. According to online sources, security forces are using batons to disperse protesters at the airport. The rail service to the airport was reportedly suspended until further notice. Flight disruptions (delays and cancelations) cannot be ruled out.

Other protests are taking place across the city, notably in front of the Supreme Court. The police has closed off access to the Parc de la Ciutadella located near the Catalan parliament building and a heavy police presence has been reported at key transport hubs in the city to prevent protesters from blocking major rail and road links. Protests are also ongoing in other urban centers across Catalunya, including in Girona and Tarragona. Associated transportation disruptions are to be expected in the coming hours throughout Barcelona and other affected cities.

Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.
