Laos: 6.1-magnitude earthquake hits near Sainyabuli November 21

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake strikes northwest of Sainyabuli on November 21; further aftershocks possible

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 6.1-magnitude earthquake about 44 km (27 mi) west-northwest of Sainyabuli, near the border with Thailand on Thursday, November 21. According to the USGS, the quake hit at approximately 06:50 (local time) at a depth of 10 km (6 mi). There were no immediate reports of damages in the area.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.

Advice

Individuals in the region are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks. 

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from the windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
