Spain: Further protests scheduled in Catalonia November 3-13 /update 11

Event

Several pro-independence groups have called for protests in Barcelona on Sunday, November 3, and Monday, November 4, to coincide with the visit of King Felipe VI to the city. On Sunday, participants plan to gather at 20:30 (local time) at the Hotel Juan Carlos I where His Majesty is due to be staying. On Monday, supporters are due to meet at 16:00 at Palau Congressos. The Ministry of Interior has reportedly ordered the deployment of approximately 400 riot police to protect the royal party. 

The Tsunami Democràtic group has called for protests throughout Catalonia on Saturday, November 9, and at surprise locations on Monday, November 11, through Wednesday, November 13.

A heightened security presence and transportation disruptions are to be expected in the coming days; associated demonstrations throughout the region may result in disruptions to transportation and business over the coming days. Counter-protests are possible. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Context

Protests have been ongoing since October 1, to mark the two-year anniversary of a failed independence referendum that took place in Catalonia in 2017. Several Catalan activists were consequently on trial for their involvement in the referendum, which Madrid deemed illegal. On October 14, the Supreme Court sentenced nine of them to between nine and 13 years in prison, prompting mass protests in Barcelona and other cities across Catalonia.
