Pakistan: 5.4-magnitude earthquake prompts road closures in Gilgit-Baltistan December 31

Event

The US Geological Survey recorded a 5.4-magnitude earthquake in Gilgit-Baltistan province at approximately 22:19 (local time) on Monday, December 30. The earthquake struck 34 km (21 mi) northwest of Idgah at a depth of 13.3 km (8 mi). According to the Gilgit-Baltistan's Public Works Department (GB-PWD), landslides triggered by a 5.4-magnitude earthquake reportedly blocked traffic on the Karakoram highway (KKH) near Chilas, Murtazaabad, Nilt Nagar, and Sost as of Tuesday, December 31. Further road closures have been reported on the Skardu, Ghizer-Chitral, and Astore roads. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.

Individuals in Gilgit Baltistan are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate transportation disruptions, and prepare for potential aftershocks.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from the windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
