Greece: 5.6-magnitude earthquake strikes southeast of Karpathos January 30

The US Geological Survey recorded a 5.6-magnitude earthquake approximately 72 km (44 mi) east-southeast of Karpathos at around 03:28 (local time) on Thursday, January 30. According to initial reports, the quake struck at a depth of 10 km (6 mi). No tsunami warning was immediately issued.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected areas over the coming hours and days.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger.
