Germany: Thousands of protesters gather in Berlin June 27 /update 3

Event

Thousands of protesters gathered in Berlin on Saturday, June 27, to take part in organized demonstrations. A Black Lives Matter demonstration was held at Siegessäule from 13:00 (local time) with at least 1000 participants present. Additionally, a Berlin Pride 2020 demonstration march was held with approximately 3500 supporters. The march reportedly began at Nollendorfplatz and continued to Alexanderplatz via Potsdamer Platz. Local police were present in the vicinity of the demonstrations to ensure participants adhered to social distancing measures amid the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Localized disruptions were reported in the vicinity of the peaceful demonstrations.  

A heightened security presence is to be anticipated and further associated demonstrations are possible in the capital in the near term.

Context

George Floyd died while being arrested by Minneapolis police officers on May 25. The four arresting police officers were subsequently fired and detained, and one has since been charged with murder. Black Lives Matter (BLM) supporters gathered on May 26 to denounce the death and actions of the police officers. Protests have since spread to a number of cities across the US and internationally.
