Macau: Tropical cyclone warning issued as tropical cyclone Nuri approaches June 12

Macau authorities issue cyclone warning as tropical cyclone Nuri approaches on June 12; heavy rain and potential flooding expected in coming days

Warning

Event

The Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) issued a tropical cyclone signal number 1 (the first in a ten-tier scale) on Friday, June 12, as tropical cyclone Nuri approaches the southern coast of China. Nuri is currently located at 17.6°N, 117.2°E, and is moving in a northeasterly direction. It is forecast to make landfall in Yangjiang (China) at noon (local time) on Sunday, June 14. Nuri is currently forecast to weaken as it moves towards the coast of China and may become a tropical depression prior to landfall. Nevertheless, Nuri will sustain potentially damaging wind gusts of between 80-97 kmh (50-56 mph) at landfall, and the MSG is scheduled to issue a tropical cyclone signal number 3 on Saturday, June 13. Rainfall of between 50-100mm (2-4 in) is also anticipated. The SMG has warned that heavy rains may produce localized flooding.

Flooding associated with rainfall is possible over low-lying areas in the coming days. Associated disruption to transport operations and utility services are also possible during the passing of the storm system.

Advice

Individuals present in the affected areas are advised to keep abreast of local weather forecasts, anticipate localized flooding and associated transportation disruptions, plan alternate routes, and adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
