On Sunday, July 5, motorcyclists gathered in their thousands in towns and cities across Germany to protest against a proposed ban on motorcycle use in some areas on Sundays and public holidays. Around 8000 motorcyclists gathered in Stuttgart (Baden-Württemberg state) and roughly 5000 in Friedrichshafen (Baden-Württemberg state) on Lake Constance. In Munich (Bavaria state) over 6000 participants gathered despite a ban on large gatherings in place due to the coronavirus disease pandemic. Bikers blocked roads in Hamburg's St Pauli district and over 1000 gathered in Schwerin (Mecklenburg-Vorpommen state). In total, demonstrations took place in over a hundred towns and cities.
Further protests over the issue are possible in the near term.
Context
In May, several federal states announced proposals to lower pollution and limit noise. Among the measures being considered is a partial ban on the use of motorcycles on Sundays and public holidays.
